Women in Port Washington History

Celebrating Women's History Month

By Diana Delgado Kollar March 14, 2024

We are thankful to these remarkable women in Port Washington history for making a difference:

Ida L. Baxter (1859-1940), local corsetiere on Carlton Avenue and one of the postmistresses at McKee's General Store, was founding member and Vice President of the Port Washington Women's Suffrage League and the Village Welfare Society. This active woman even campaigned for Town of North Hempstead Auditor in 1919.

Virginia “Ginger” Marshall Martus (1930-2017), an incredible resident of Port Washington. Ginger was a nautical historian, born and raised in Port Washington. She was very active in preserving the town’s maritime history and was an early member and trustee of the Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society. Over the course of several years, Ginger donated a collection of correspondence, photographs, articles, audiotapes and artifacts to the Local History Department that are a unique and valuable resource for the study of Port Washington’s changing landscape, many of which can be viewed online.

Andrea Mastrocinque-Martone, co-founder of Pride in Port. At the time of its founding, Mastrocinqe-Martone was the Editor in Chief of Port Washington News. She recalls that from the beginning, the goal of the event was to unify the town, much like the newspaper. “When I got the job at the Port News... I wanted to take the paper into a whole new direction. I wanted it to be the people’s paper,” said Mastrocinque-Martone. “I wanted it to be read by every group in Port Washington. And how do you do that? Well, by including every faction of society in Port, which includes the senior citizens, the school district, the fire department, the police department, the Chamber of Commerce, the schools, anybody who lives in Port Washington who cares about its history and retaining its hometown climate.”
